We don’t have a dishwasher so its natural to think about whether its a good idea to start using disposable, paper or plastic plates, cups, even spoons, forks and knives. Washing the dishes is back breaking labour that has somehow survived since the dark ages. It should be abolished as an unfair practice and anyone caught doing it should be punished. I usually find a really good excuse not to do it, but since its not fair to anyone, I’ve broken down and slaved away at the sink shining the dishes. I think part of the problem is the boring setting – our kitchen sink is facing a wall. So there is nothing you can do but wash the dishes when you’re there. No watching TV or looking out a window is possible. That’s gotta be a crime too. Home builders should think about it, there is no place to put a dishwasher, let’s be smart and put the darn sink near a window or install an in-wall TV stand. We did try using disposable plates, left over from a party, recently. Within a couple of days, they ran out and we forgot how nice it was once when we didn’t have to wash that many dishes. I do care about the environment and would like to make a concious decision which is the most perfect balance between laziness and green. Trust me, this requires a lot of careful thought. If you always wash the dishes and never use disposable ones, you might as well quit eating, because you just can’t win: it takes more calories to wash dishes than you acquire by eating a decent meal. If you dipose of your paper or plastic plates after every meal, you should be ashamed of yourself for creating so much non-biodegradable garbage. No, they probably can’t recycle plastic plates after we’re done eating oily curry off of them. So a happy medium would be to use disposable plates sometimes and wash the other. But then you’re not getting good at either. Plus you’re not helping the environment any by dirtying up water, contaminating it with curried grime. So as you can see I meant it when I said this is a difficult decision and poses a serious dilemma.
