As more and more people are discovering the collaborative benefits of Wikis, they are finally becoming mainstream and making their way into the enterprise. A lot of companies are coming up with their own Wikis these days, Microsoft with their SharePoint, SAP with their NetWeaver Portal and others [I suspect that IBM and Oracle have got a similar offerings under theirs WebSphere and BEA portals respectively).
Google's got a new Wiki of their own called Knol. Their philosophy is to attract experts using an Adsense based revenue model and create a knowledge base that is more reliable than the the free for all Wikipedia model. Another difference is this: Knol will let multiple pages on the same topic unlike Wikipedia. Users will determine which Knol becomes the most popular using ratings while other pages will fade away. I'm not sure if this is such a great idea. But I'm sure they've thought things through and know what they're doing. I just don't link the idea of some great information being buried away just because its on another Knol page that's not highly rated. I've seen a few experts' pages and the content looks credible but I haven't found unreliable looking content on Wikipedia all that much. It remains to be seen how popular this will be in the months and years to come. I've signed up and created a page on Calgary.
