Why Study the Quran?

The Quran is not like any other book. It is the last of the revealed books of Allah sent to mankind with guidance. It was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), sent down with the angel Gabriel over a period of twenty three years. The Quran was revealed in an oral form, memorized and written down by the companions of the Prophet (ﷺ). The Quran is not a book of history although it contains some history. The Quran is not a book of science even though it contains some scientific facts. The Quran is not a book you can read cover to cover as you read a novel or a book written by human beings. The Quran is a miraculous book that contains the actual speech of Allah.

The Quran is in the Arabic language. One of the first miracles of the Quran is the language it uses. Moses came at a time when magic was at its peak. Moses was granted a miraculous staff from Allah which turned into a serpent at times and parted the Red Sea at another instance. Jesus came at a time when medicine was at its peak and he surprised everyone when he was able to heal the sick and make the dead come back to life through his God given miracles. Similarly, the Quran was revealed at a time when poetry was at its peak in the Arabian peninsula and it overwhelmed everyone that heard it being recited. The Quran has posed a challenge to have someone reproduce even a chapter like the one contained in it. In over 14 centuries, no one has been able to take up that challenge and come up with anything that rivals a chapter from the Quran.

The Quran contains various themes that all focus on guiding humanity to live life on this earth as Allah intended us to live. There are verses that talk about the previous generations of human beings and the Prophets (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon all of them) that were sent to them over the many centuries. The Quran also talks about the signs of Allah in His creations, forcing people to think about how everything came into existence. The Quran also speaks about how human beings will be raised on the Day of Judgement and about the pleasures in store in Heaven and the torments of the Hellfire. The Quran also tells us how to live life, explaining legal matters for everything from marriage and divorce to business dealings and criminal justice. In other words, it has everything needed for individuals and societies to lead a life according to God’s will.

And Allah knows best.
