Reading the Quran daily with understanding is one of the ways to connect ourselves with the Quran on a regular basis. This is a good way to establish a lifelong relationship with the book of Allah. Having a good relationship with the Quran where we regularly return to the Quran to seek guidance is an important part of every Muslim’s life.
As Muslims we should rely on the Quran to understand our life’s purpose. We should look to the Quran for our understanding of everything: our world view needs to be based on the Quran. Furthermore, the understanding of the Quran should be based on the Hadith and Sunnah (how Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) explained it).
The Quran consists of many things that all provide us with guidance in one way or another. The smaller chapters that were revealed in the Meccan period (the early part of Islam) are all about building faith in the hearts of Muslims. They talk about relying on Allah alone. And they speak of the Day of Judgement and life after death. They have elaborate descriptions of Paradise & Hell so people can visualize it and be reminded of the reward and punishment for good and evil deeds. The bigger chapters from the Medinan period (revealed after the migration of the Prophet to the city of Madina) discuss the establishment of Islam in Muslim’s daily lives, both for individuals and for the society. In other words, first the the effort was made to strengthen the faith of the Muslims then they were given instructions on how to establish a Muslim household and society.
The Quran is for eternity. We as Muslims believe that there will be no further Prophets or Messengers after the final Prophet & Messenger Muhammad (ﷺ). The Quran contains guidance for the entire human race applicable until the Day of Judgment. If we don’t read it daily with understanding, we should start today.
